As the pair now prepares for the upcoming release of new five-track EP Sanctuary, announcing a Trevor Project-supported tour in conjunction, Aly & AJ continue to promote recent single "Church" with a new music video.
"Church" finds the sisters layering their heavenly vocals over each other, as well as 80s-inspired synths, as they discuss making mistakes and how the concept of faith plays a role in their lives. As Aly & AJ ask for redemption for those past misdeeds, doing a little soul-searching along the way, atmospheric production falls onto the listener, calming all nerves and stress.
Though the sisters acknowledge their shortcomings, let it be known, they certainly have no regrets. "I do bad things, can't you see it on my face, I get caught in every lie, I can't even stop to take care of my own self, let alone somebody else," Aly admittedly sings on the second verse. The duo appears content with facing the consequences for their actions. It's a signal of their rebirth.
When heard with the context and understanding of Aly & AJ's connection and personal history with religion, often outspoken about their Christian beliefs, the underlying meaning of "Church" gets a bit more murky. Ultimately dealing with immediate aftermath and forgiveness, the duo now uses the effort as a search for alternative safe spaces to ask for security and comfort.
The potentially controversial subject matter of "Church" is a stark yet welcomed difference from the duo's typical stories of love and heartache, delivering the promise that their new EP will dive into more mature content such as mental health.
Aly & AJ bring their Sanctuary tour to Austin on June 9.
